Curt ACHESON

CAREER PROFILE:

                  Curt retired from the R.C.M.P. in April of 2006 after completing over 34 years of service. He was an experienced investigator trained in mediation, hostage negotiation and critical incident management. Curt had 16 years of management experience in the R.C.M.P. in a variety of capacities including Watch Commander and Senior Patrol Supervisor in large contract Detachments where he oversaw the operational and administrative responsibilities of 20 employees, including Police Officers and Civilian support staff.

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY:

2001 Ð 2006   Sergeant investigator for the R.C.M.P. ÒEÓ Division Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) responsible for the Island District responsible for the investigation of complaints against regular members of the R.C.M.P. including public complaints, code of conduct contraventions, statutory (criminal) breaches and harassment complaints.
1998 Ð 2001 Senior Patrol Supervisor at Nanaimo Detachment at the rank of Sergeant. As the second in command of a 20 person Watch, Curt was responsible for attending all serious calls for service and providing front line supervision to the investigators at scene. Also responsible for promoting leadership, motivation and resolving day to day conflicts that developed between clients and staff.
1989 Ð 1998  Watch Commander at Campbell River Detachment at the rank of Corporal and responsible for overseeing the day to day operations of a 6 person General Duty Watch.
1981 - 1989  Constable investigator posted to Vernon Detachment, often assuming the role of Watch Commander in their absence.

1973 Ð 1978   Constable investigator posted to the Campbell River Detachment and to the North Island Highway Patrol Unit.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION:

                  Curt completed over 65 training courses with the R.C.M.P. including Hostage Negotiators/Barricaded Persons, Critical Incident Stress Debriefing, Interest Based Negotiation, Mediation, Introduction to Management, Police Supervisors, Leadership Training and Harassment Investigators. He also completed over 210 hours of Mediation and Negotiation training at the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) including Resolving Conflict in the Workplace, Dealing with Anger, Mediation Skills Level 1 and II, Negotiation Skills Level I and II, Critical Skills for Communicating in Conflict, Caucusing, Shifting from Positions to Interests, Art of Reframing and Mediating Discrimination and Harassment Complaints.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

                  Curt mediated a number of conflicts in the R.C.M.P. and with outside partners as a mediator within the R.C.M.P.Õs Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) network. In addition, he supplied training on a continuous basis to senior investigators within the Island District on the proper manner of conducting Internal R.C.M.P. Investigations. He has extensive experience investigating harassment issues and specifically, complicated workplace conflicts.

PERSONAL:

                  Curt was involved with the Campbell River Minor Baseball Association for over 10 years in the role of coach, umpire and as Association Vice-President. He was awarded the AssociationÕs ÔLifetime Achievement AwardÕ in 2004. He also coached minor hockey in Campbell River for many years. Curt resides in Campbell River, B.C. with his wife, Odette.
