Biography of Gerry Shimko

Gerald (Gerry) Shimko is a retired Deputy Chief of Police, having served twenty-eight years with the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.  As a police officer he served in various operational and administrative roles and continues to have a strong interest in efficiency and effectiveness of police resources, research, strategic leadership and human resource management.  While working with the EPS, several innovative and creative initiatives were undertaken including the deployment of EPS personnel on UN Civilian Police Peacekeeping missions, developing an in-house post-secondary education program, developing a competency-based promotion process, streamlining the recruiting and selection process, and spearheading the development of the Zebra Child Protection Centre.

In the past few years, Gerry has completed several post-secondary initiatives and professional designations including a Master of Arts in Leadership and Training, Certification as a Human Resources Professional (CHRP), the Police Management Certificate (with Distinction), the Management Fundamentals Program, the Executive Human Resources Certificate, and the Addictions Studies Certificate. Volunteer activities include serving as a director on non-profit boards including the Zebra Child Protection Society.   Gerry presently provides consulting and training services for community, government and non-government agencies.
